Verrucae on the feet, also known as plantar warts, are small, rough growths on the sole of the foot caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). The virus enters the skin through tiny cuts or breaks and thrives in warm, moist environments, such as swimming pools, gyms, and communal changing rooms.
Verrucae commonly appear on weight-bearing areas of the foot, including the heel and ball of the foot. They may look like thickened skin with small black dots (clotted blood vessels) and can be painful when walking or standing, especially when pressure is applied.
