Bunion

Bunions: Causes, Symptoms & Treatment Options

A bunion (also known as hallux valgus) is a bony lump that forms at the base of the big toe, where it meets the foot. It develops when the big toe gradually shifts toward the smaller toes, causing the joint to stick out. Bunions can worsen over time and may lead to pain, swelling, redness, and difficulty wearing shoes.

Bunions are often linked to foot structure and biomechanics, but they can also be aggravated by tight or narrow footwear, high heels, and prolonged pressure on the forefoot.

What Causes Bunions?

  • Genetic foot structure
  • Flat feet or unstable joints
  • Tight, narrow, or high-heeled shoes
  • Arthritis or joint conditions

Symptoms of Bunions

  • A visible bump on the side of the big toe joint
  • Pain or tenderness around the joint
  • Swelling and redness
  • Restricted movement of the big toe

Corns or calluses from toe rubbing

Bunion Treatment Options

Early bunion treatment can help relieve symptoms and slow progression. A podiatrist can assess your foot and recommend appropriate care, which may include:

  • Footwear advice and shoe modifications
  • Padding or splinting to reduce pressure
  • Custom orthotics to improve foot mechanics
  • Callus and skin care
  • Pain and inflammation management

In severe or painful cases that do not respond to conservative treatment, bunion surgery may be discussed.

Book an assessment with one of our podiatrists today to discuss the most suitable bunion treatment and keep your feet comfortable and supported.
